I am getting a new lab 5 weeks now. I have trained a few of my dogs in the past with easy things like shake, play dead, heal, roll-over, etc. With the lab, I would like to train him to be a gun dog for hunting. What is a good way to train him for reacting to gun fire? Is there a test other than shooting around him to get him used to it? Is there a good book to recommend? Thanks!What鈥檚 a good way to train a new lab pup for hunting?
I don't usually endorse people or products on this forum, but contact Dr. Nick Elam, DVM at this address:

Aside from being an expert on reproduction, Dr. Nick owns, breeds, trains Labradors for hunting. And has owned several nationally ranked hunting dogs. What he doesn't know about Labradors and lab hunting - isn't worth knowing.
My dad used to ';break'; his puppies - that is, teach them to be good dogs first - then they would go on to hunting school.
Yea. Dr. Nick. He's a good person to ask about this.What鈥檚 a good way to train a new lab pup for hunting?
well, you really shouldn't have him yet at five weeks and first you need to train him to basic commands plus retrieving…there are many great gun dog books at the library.pheasants forever magazine has great hunting tips. Speak with a hunter whose dog you are impressed with and get tips from him….hunting dogs are either gun shy or they are not…you won't know til fall ….keep this dogs age in mind as you train. You got him too young and this will also affect his self esteem and socialization.
Also make sure that he parents of the lab puppy are hunters. That tends to carry over in the breeding.
Join your local hunt club… and train with them… most usually no experience is necessary as you will learn the sport with your dog… have fun with it and…
Good Luck
