If you really want to spend the money and get the best, go for a US military issue machete available from countless online suppliers.

Cold Steel makes a great line of machetes that will last a lifetime.

My recommendation, though? It's going to be so sparsely used, a $6 Walmart one is about the best you can get. Think of it like a disposable lighter....use it and get the use out of it, but don't plan for it to last forever.

If you plan to cut firewood with it, don't! Buy a good hatchet or camp axe instead!

Addendum to Pierre:

I consider them to be disposable because they aren't designed nor intended to last longer than one or two seasons at most. A machete isn't a ';knife'; in the classic sense. It has no design for long-term function. It's simply a piece of cheap sheet steel with a rough edge ground on it. That's why they tend to sell for less than $10 in most cases. You use it til it's used up (bent, dull etc) and you toss it and buy another.

If you buy a $10 machete, even using it one season to cut the weeds out of your favorite duck blind, you got your money's worth of use out of it. You come out far better by simply tossing it and buying another rather than spending even an hour taking care of the old one. It's like reloading ammo....there comes a point whereby spending time reloading ammo just isn't cost effective when the same ammo can be bought in the store for half that amount.I'm want to buy a machete for my brother in law to take hunting.
