Are we allowed to bring hunting firearms into Canada?

I am getting my H1 license in Ontario soon, I'm a Ontario resident and was wondering if we are allowed to purchase hunting rifles in USA and bring it into Canada? Are we allowed to bring hunting firearms into Canada?
American law prohibits foreigners from taking possession of firearms purchased in the country. If you buy a gun in the states it needs to be shipped to Canada by a licenced dealer who must get an export permit. They have had some problems in the past with the CIA giving AK-47s, Barret .50 riffles and RPGs to dangerous rebels and they figured the best way to stop it was to restrict the sales of sporting guns to foreign hunters and target shooters.

In the legalise forum there are a few stickied threads about importing stuff. The only reason you would want to go through all the BS is if the gun you wanted was impossible to buy from a Canadian dealer or a dealer in another country with less stupid laws. Are we allowed to bring hunting firearms into Canada?
Contact the Canadian Firearms Center. The official government agency dealing with firearms and firearm regulations in Canada. They can give you all the information you need to know.
