To purchase a hunting license, you must do one of the following (apprentice licenses excluded)

1. present a previously held hunting license, or

2. present evidence of having successfully completed a hunter education course (from any state), or

3. swear that you are 21 years of age or older and have previously held a hunting license (from any state).

If you have to take the hunter education course, they average 8-12 hours. There is no charge to take the course. The link below will let you click on a map for the county you live in for info on when and where the next class is available.

Here in Ohio you CANNOT use a rifle for deer hunting. Shotguns with slugs (no buckshot) or muzzleloading rifle .38 caliber or larger; or handgun with 5-in. minimum length barrel, using straight-walled cartridges .357 caliber or larger, or longbow or crossbow when in season. Crossbows can be used by anyone, not just hunters with a physical disability.

Full hunting regulations are at the link below.

You take a hunter safety course, pass and get a certificate. You take that in with you the first time to purchase your license and tags, after that , keep it in a safe place and just use the previous years license to get the next one. Ohio is white tail country. Most white tail hunters shoot at ranges under 200 yards. Calibers that work well, depending on your stature etc are : 243 win, 25-06, 257 roberts, 308 win, 270(my all time all around favorite caliber), and even the venerable old 30-30 just to name a few popular choices.

Welcome to hunting and shoot safe
You have to go thru a two day, about 18hr seminar all the while with a test at the end. Pass the test and you get your license. After that you usually get to shoot a gun or a shotgun just to get the experience of handling it. Contact the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources website or in person.
